My family is looking for its first dog (husband, wife, and three kids -- 14, 12, and 10 years old). We're interested in the qualities and characteristics of the Rhodesian Ridgeback. Is this breed a wise choice for first time dog owners?

These dogs are very territorial - they were bred to fight off lions for goodness sakes! If you get one as a puppy, and socialize it well, it could be a great dog - they are affectionate and loyal. However, you would have to be weary when introducing it to strangers. Since your children are older, I wouldn't worry about the dog's interaction with them. Why a Rhodesian Ridgeback, I wonder. I have not owned one, and they aren't the common 'family pet', so I find it interesting that you would opt to go with that breed.

The best way to find out if the rhodesian is right for you is to go to breeder and ask if you can work with the dogs for a day. this will give you a good idea on whats needed for day to day care.
