How Long do Puppies Have Worms?

Hey everyone! Can I just say how happy I am to have found this website?! I'm getting a 9 week old Brittany pup on Sunday am and doing all I can to read up on the best training techniques, learning from the mishaps of other owners, things like that! This is my first dog all on my own. My family has always had Brittanys, our last one was 10 years old when we had to put her down two years ago due to cancer.

So, this may be a silly question, maybe not. Considering I was about 12 when our last dog was a puppy, I can't remember how long puppies usually have worms for. I know almost all puppies have them and eventually they are taken care of. So, considering the puppy will be about 10 weeks old when I get her, and she is up to date on all her shots, vaccinations, etc., will she still have worms I will have to take care of?

I am also new here, but I am a breeder so hopefully I can answer your question. My pups are all wormed and vaccinated before they go to their new homes. They get their first wormer at 1 mo., second dose at 2 mo., and their new owners are told that they should get wormed once a month for the next two months until the pup is 4 mos. of age. I also send home an informational packet about the type of wormer given as well as their health record from the vet with the dates of shots and worming. I give a small bag of the type of puppy food I feed. Hopefully your breeder will provide all the information you need. Best of luck with your new puppy.

Puppies who end up with worms should be treated ASAP. Serious conditions can be caused by untreated worms. And for the most part (as far as i know) puppies don't naturally have worms and they don't magically disappear on their own. If you go to your local PetSmart they will be able to help you get ready for your new puppy and give you tips on ownership.

puppies should be wormed at 2,4,6,8 & 12 weeks.It is done at 2 week intervals because the wormer kills the worms but not the eggs, so worming every 2 weeks while they are young kils the worms that have hatched from the eggs. You may want to worm your pup to make sure this was done, it won't hurt him/her. Or the vet can do a fecal sample and test to see if he/she is worm free. Most all pups are born with worms, the mom may appear to be worm free, but some worms lay dormant in the mom and during pregnancy are passed onto the pups. Talk to your vet about a maintenance program for your pup. I worm all my dogs every 6 months, they can get worms from being outside and sniffing in the wrong places. Fleas also cause worms so the prevention of fleas is a must.
