I'm new to this forum and i'm sure i'll get lots of useful information about keeping my dog happy from all of you.
I live in the Los Angeles suburbs in Ventura County, and I'm a happy owner of a female Siberian Husky named Kaya. She's 11 mos old, and she's got brown and white markings+blue eyes. Beautiful dog.
I grew up with several dogs in my house, but this is the first time i've been solely responsible for a dog of my own. My wife and I got Kaya back in Feb when she was 2 monts old. It was difficult at first, but we've all adjusted to each other, and she's a happy dog.
I'm looking forward to interacting in this forum with all of you dog lovers.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hey Kevin-
We are in the process of adopting an Alaskan Husky (light brown with white) puppy & we are naming her Kaya! How did you arrive at that name (if you named her)?
Oh yeah, & we just joined the forum! We also have a husky mix that we have had almost 12 years. We adopted him from a shelter (he was a stray). He is the smartest dog we have ever encountered (we are pet sitters & dog walkers), which makes it easy for us-he almost takes care of himself (and communicates quite well)!

My wife found the name 'Kaya' in a list of Eskimo names. We both instantly looked at each other and new it would be perfect.
If I knew how to put pictures on this website, i'd love to show you pics of Kaya. Kaya is very smart also. The best part of having a Siberian Husky is she keeps herself really clean. We have not had to give her a bath since we got her at 2 months. She does not smell at all, and when she gets dirty, she licks herself clean.
The only negative we've come across so far is she has a really sensative stomach, which leads to soft stools from time to time.
Good luck with the Alaskan Husky!

Hi Kevin-
We were looking around at eskimo names too & came across Kaya & then looked it up in other languages & it did seem to fit for her. Plus it is a Bob Marley song (and we are Bob Marley fans to say the least). WE just had to go with it.
Our current dog (a husky mix) also has a sensitive stomach-his is on "the other end" though. He goes through a day here or there approx. once a week where he will not eat until he pukes & then he is fine again. The vet could not really explain it, he said to try giving him a Tums when he gets like that. But he is at least 12 years old & what we are doing seems to be working for him. Go figure.

I love Bob Marley also...I wish I could say we named her Kaya because of that. We loved the name 'Marley' also, but that's such a trendy name for dogs these days. And most Marleys tend to be boy dogs.
What kind of food do you feed your husky mix? We're still trying to figure out the best food for Kaya.

He is a typical husky, a real picky eater. We tried to feed him dry food (like Iams) for a while, but it would just sit there. So we tried different stuff until we found something he will eat right up (that is, when he is eating) every time, which turned out to be Alpo canned food (part. the Filet Mignon Steakhouse variety). He loves table scraps too, of course, but we try to keep that to a minumum. It seems to be working for him-no health problems & we will have had him 12 years this coming Feb. We adopted him from a shelter when he was around 1 year old (he was a stray). That may (or may not) contribute to his eating habits, hard to say.
When we get Kaya (we are picking her up Thanksgiving Day) we are going to try giving her what she has been raised on so far (the brand is Diamond Hi-Energy) & the owner recommended a salmon oil supplement and/or fish like canned sardines and mackerel and eventually giving her some raw meat/bones as well (careful never to give a cooked bone as this changes the bone structure and makes them dangerous). So that is what we are going to try. She also gave us these links to check out for more info.: http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/foodreviews/dry.html
