Hi everyone -

I have a question on travelling with pet. We are going to my in-laws in PA for Thanksgiving ( last minute plan) so we have to board our dog Jasper in a boarding kennel... I called 4 places and all are either fully booked or with a long waiting list. So we may have to take Jasper with us. She is 43 pounds, 15 mths old, so she will have to go into the Cargo area on the plan.

Does anyone has experience in flying their dogs? Can you share with me?I am concern if this is good for Jasper? ( she has never been on the plane before)

Thanks,
Riggi

You mean on a plane? If so, that's a very different circumstance you're undergoing. I haven't gone on a plane with my dog so I'm not very sure what it's like, but if Jasper is in the cargo-section I'm sure they'll keep him safe and make sure to tell them to put him in a cage you bring. If you're unsure, I would consider leaving Jasper at the house and ask a friend that is staying home, like a nearby neighbor who's staying home for Thanksgiving, to check on Jasper in the mornings and at nights and to feed him and let him use the potty and let him exercise for a couple minutes every day while you're gone. My mom has done that with one of her friends multiple times with dogs and it's worked out good. :) Hope I helped you! Good luck!

yes, it will be a 2 hour flight. I wasnt' sure if Jasper will get used to in ta Cargo section either. She is crate trained but ever since she was 1 years old, we seldome have the need for her to stay in the crate.. and because she is a medium size dog, so we never put her in one of the travelling carrier either . it would probably be something she is not used when travelling in the cargo section =-( I think your idea is great, let me check with my neighbour and hope we can arrage something.. well this time I learned ,I need to reserve boarding at least 2 months ahead of time during high seasion =-)

I am still curious has anyone ever took their dogs on plan when travelling? meaning in the cargo session and how did it go?

I haven't personally put one of my pets on a plane, but my vet had told me about when she got her dog. She had flown numerous times to see her new baby while she was waiting for him to become old enough to leave, when it was time the breeders put him on the plane, she said she had to call and ask if that was the same dog, she had visited, and purchased. She told me his whole disposition had changed, he was timid/scared. This was nothing like the puppy she picked. I breed dogs and refuse to ship any of my puppies, I live in Ga. and have had people as far as Maryland drive to get their babies.
It sounds like your options are limited, do you have any reliable teens in your area, who can stay with your pup? Driving would be another option, there are numerous pet friendly hotels so he can stay with you. If you have to fly; I would suggest talking to your vet, they can give you an appropriate sedative for your baby (I think they use valuim) then maybe he won't be scared.
My girlfriend has flown her cats that way, she made sure at cargo they knew she would be watching them too, and told them they were not to throw her babies like luggage! She had her cats sedated, and said they were home before they knew it!
I know lots of people have flown with their pets, and not all have been bad experiences, so if you have to don't freak out(your dog will sense that) get some meds from the vet for both plane rides, and have fun!
Happy Holidays
