I have 2 Chinese Crested (4 & 6 Years) that I rescued from a shelter. They both have a lot of small cysts, that are hard & are mostly on their neck and legs. They have obviously been neglected but they are really great dogs and quite well behaved & happy to be in a safe place but the cysts are full of infection and I don't know just what to do. I did take them to a vet but he wasn't any help. Does anyone have any sugestions on what to do to heal them up. Appreciate any help you may offer. Thanks: montabee

If your vet couldn't help you, I seriously suggest asking around and looking for a better vet. A vet is going to know how to help a lot more then someone on a dog forum. Maybe you should ask the shelter you got your dogs from for a list of good local vets. Infections are a BIG deal, so it's important to get advice from a professional.

And he doesn't have to write a perscription or anything like that, he just has to tell you what would be best, be it a change in diet, more rest, a certain lotion, etc.

I am a breeder of Chinese Cresteds and acne is a real problem with this breed. Frequesnt bathing is necessary with a mild unscented soap. You may also want to try mixing 1 part Listerine and 1 part Witch Hazel(can be purchased at Walgreens or other drug store). Spray this on the dogs daily and rub in with cotton balls. Witch Hazel is an astringent. As far as the infection goes, the vet should have prescribed an antibotic. The problem with the vets is that this is a fairly new breed, not even being recongnized by AKC till the 90's and not very many vets are up to date on their health care. My vet is 74 years old and he has never seen them ecept for mine.

Thank you for the information. I will try the Listering & Witch Hazel and will also ask my vet to check on giving them some antibiotic shots or topical to treat them with. They really are wonderful pets & we are very much in love with them already. montabee
