I just adopted a male terrier mix from a family who had to rehome him due to illness. They think he's about 4 years old. He's doing 2 things I need to figure out.

The first problem is that I think he is "marking." I don't think its just his need to urinate because I take him out a lot...like every 3 hours or more often. And a lot of times he'll do it shortly after we've come home.

He does "mark" a lot when we are outside. I take him to a dog park and he spends more time "marking" than playing with other dogs.

He's been with me about a month. He did it once every day in the house the first week he was here. The second week, he didn't at all. In the last two weeks, he's done it about two times. I don't think the problem is silved. I know he was neutered late in life. I was told he was about 2 when neutered. I read online that the older they are when neutered, the more of a chance this habit will develope. What do I do to rid him of this habit.

The second problem is that he is a crybaby. He's a small dog, about 20 lbs or thereabouts. He'll cry for no reason. LIke when we're driving in the car or in the mornings, he'll walk and pace the house crying. I think its because he wants to go outside when he cries in the morning. WHen he cries in the car, I think its because he doesn't feel like he is close enough to me because I put him in the backseat when I'm driving.

Any solutions for his crying?

Thanks to anyone who knows the answer to these two things. I love my little guy and neither of these two things are huge deals but I would like to be able to figure them out.

hey tere...the marking issue....i dont really know what to tell you about that...it sounds like its subsiding but you're right, you dont want him doing that everytime you get the carpets cleaned....hopefully osmeone else can help you with that. if not, call a trainer and just ask how they would handle it....the crying however is something i can relate to. my dog is a bit of a crybaby too. it seems to me that he does it more when he's anxious and excited or when he has to go to the bathroom....i can tell the difference between the two now and you'll get there too...in the mornings he probably has a lot of energy AND needs to go to the bathroom so let him out, maybe play with him a little bit if you have time....the car crying is most likely him being anxious and excited...the car means your going on an adventure and he can't wait to get where you're going....for example, my dog starts pacing and breathing heavy and whining as soon as i say: wanna go to the park?? he gets excited...so when your dog starts whining, let him out to do his business and then ignore him until he stops crying...especially when you're in the car, try to ignore him...my dog whined in the car too for about 2 or 3 months and eventually got used to it and stop whining.....of course every dog is different and he may have these habits pretty hard in his brain but thats no reason to try to change them...keep him where you have him in the car and dont pet him or let him come up front or babytalk him....if you speak to him, soothingly say: its ok boy, good boy, we're almost there...of course he cant understand you but the tone of your voice will help him get the idea that everything's gonna be fine....try that, see how it works...congrats on your new baby by the way and good luck! let us know how it works out!

That`s really sweet man. The dog crying because he`s on the backseat. Really really sweet. But would you cry for him? Hope you`ll give him the same affection he feels for you. take care
