 Hello all, a lot of you know me, but I am just wondering about something. My little Sugar has been doing so well with potty training, until lately. She pees on the floor sometimes, and poops on it too sometimes. She is 4and a half months old now, and I have never actually put a time limit on any of my dogs in the past to see how long it took to completely house train them. Am I rushing it, or am I not getting on to her enough when she does it inside? She does good most of the time, but there are times when she just seems to do it inside despite all I do. I take her outside regurarly, and she even uses a puppy pad at the back door. But, I can tell she is getting a stubborn streak. Is this normal you think? I scold her when she does it inside, and put her in her kennel for 10 or 15 minutes afterwards. If I find it after she's already done it, I think it's too late then to scold her, right?? I just need a little friendly advice here, lol !! I thought I knew about all there was to know about dogs, guess I was wrong, lol !! Thanks for the input, I know I'll get some good advice from my friends !!!!!

Hi Rhonda,
First of all house training a puppy will take incredible patience. You are doing everything right except maybe putting her in her crate afterwards. Dogs do not seem to understand why they are in their crate when you are home. It is not getting the message across that it is because they poo or pee in the house. Catching them in the act and rushing them outside after each time works better, but doxies are stubborn, and as a breeder, I should know, lol. puppy pads work great as well as treats when they successfully do their business outside. After a while the idea gets across, so be patient and consistant with your little angel and she will begin to be more consistant in her behavior. Hope this gave you a little help.

Thank you so much snobird for the positive reinforcement !!! I really needed it, lol!! I know it takes lots and lots of patience to completely house train one. I do use the crate method. I put her in her kennel, and leave her there for about 15 minutes after she has an accident in the house. She is doing really well with the puppy pad at the back door. I am pleased with that, because winter is just right around the corner, and I don't really want to stand outside in 10 degree weather this winter to wait for her to potty, lol, know what I mean. So it's ok with me if she just does her business on the puppy pad, lol ! I know people who live in apartments, and in big cities use puppy pads all the time. And yes, she does have a stubborn streak, typical I guess, like you say. But, she's such a sweetheart, and it's hard to stay mad at her for long !!! Those eyes get me every time, lol. Thank you for the input, I'll just keep pluggin away, and I know one day she'll say, Hey, I got it, LOL !!! Thanks again!!!

Dachshunds are incredibly intelligent, we are being shown this daily with our little angels. They are very loyal but as I said they are very stubborn. We currently have two litters on the ground and another due on the 2nd of Oct. jJust about the time we really get started on training of any kind, it is time to start over, lol. I really wouldn't have it any other way. We love our angels so much and try very hard to place them in homes with the same kind of attention that we give them. We stay in touch with their new owners and often they send us pictures as they grow up so we can continue to share in that experience also. It is very rewarding and makes what we do so very worth while. Good luck with Sugar, it'll all pay off for you.

Thank you snobird for the input. I didn't really know you breed dachshunds. And, yes, you are right, they are definitely stubborn dogs. But, like you say also, well worth the effort. Sugar is the third doxie I have had, and they are such a joy, and probably the best breed of dog I have ever owned. I'll just keep on doing what I'm doing, she'll get the message before long,I know, lol !! I think she tests me sometimes too. Thanks again !!
