I was just wondering because I've heard 8 weeks in the past but in a new book I'm reading it says they would really benefit by spending a 9th week with their mother... what do some of you think about this?

It really depends on the breed ...the smaller the breed , the longer it should stay..some as long as 12-14 weeks..

The longer the pups stay at home, the better socialized they are. Their mother teaches them not to bite which then leaves the new owner not having to train as much. I think it is better for all pups to stay a bit longer with the mother but if the breeder is selling them at eight weeks old that is absolutely normal:)

Yes, 8 months is like the minimum age they can be taken away from their mothers, but the longer you wait, the better. Like me, I just got a 6 week old Shih tzu, and he seems to be doing very well. He's paper trained and only uses the potty when were at home. He doesn't like to use the potty anywhere else. And he is also very sweet!

When the puppy is weaned from their mother's milk. Usually @ 6 weeks.
At that age, the puppy will learn their place in your family "his/her pack" early on.
They are also easier to train then.

A puppy should never leave its mother until it has reached 8 weeks. As some have already posted, the longer you wait for your puppy, the better.
