Well fisrt off I'm 16 years old and I got a bichon/poodle mix yesterday for 550$. It's 8 weeks old (Today) and I've had it for 1 night so far.

Well I put it in her crate and it kept on crying forever!! So I had to wait about 20 mins until it fell asleep and then I had to sneak out of the room. The breeder told me that it has to pee every 5-6 hours so it went to sleep at 11pm and I woke up at 4am to put it on news paper, but then after it pee'd and I put it back into its crate ie kept crying again!! This is 4am in the morning and my parents are sleeping so I had to sleep with it! She is very cute and small so all it did was cuddle with me for a few hours until my parents woke up....

So my first question is... do you think a small bichon/poodle can hold its pee from 11pm-8am?

My second question is, I know dogs need to brush their teeth but how often and how? Like can I use a normal tooth brush and what sort of tooth paste?

My third question is: How many meals does it eat a day? and do they consist of all puppy food (The hard ones) Can I feed it a little bit of bananas, apples, as well?

Fourth question: How do you news paper train it? It pee'd successfully on the newspaper ONCE, that was at 4am but then it didnt pee/poo on it ever again, so is there a easy way to news paper train it? Because right now my parents only let it in a tiled floor room until it's trained

I also got the papers from the breeder than its got its first shots Aug 20th, so when will I have to get the next shots?

Oh and is there a way to stop it from crying? I mean people say ignore it but sometimes it's hard when it's really loud at 4am in the morning, I haven't left her side for over 20 mins so far... she keeps crying for atleast 10-15 mins straight :\

There also seems to be some hard spots on her skin, like a small circle and she keeps scratching them, there small (She has about 2 of those spots), what are they? and she alsy keeps scratching her ears, like every 5 minutes when shes awake, she also bites her feet/legs..., why?

Oh and last question, I heard dish soap (Palmolive) is good to use to wash her with, is this true?

I know it's alot of questions, but I'm new to this and I want her to be healthy

Heres a pictures of how small she is.. maybe 2 pounds? Im not sure lol

hi and a very big warm welcome to you:) congratulations on getting your new pup very exciting time for you.

1st question{holding her water}
no pup can hold its water long if there going to wee thre going to wee try and get her to have one before you go to bed,and if you can get up earlier to let her out for one you will soon have her in a routine.

2nd question{brushing teeth}
brushing a dogs teeth is not as easy as it sounds,some dogs like it some dont,as your pup is still very young you need to use a very soft tooth brush you can buy a finger stall brush which you put on your finger add a little amount of tooth paste and gentle brush using a normal toothbrush is no good there are tooth brushes for sale in all good major pet shops as for the tooth paste go to your local pet shop and they will advise you on a good paste for your pup.

3rd question{feeding}
as your pup is still young i would suggest 3 meals aday but only small amounts if you got to your local vets they will give you a measuring cup with all guidelines written on it explaining how much to give your dog,feeding should be done once in the morning then tea time then supper time but remember do not mix food either give pup dry or tineed or foiled never give the teo as a dry food is a complete food and there is no need to add the two this way you will cause problems for yourself.

4th question{toilet training}
as your pup is not used to going to toilet on paper you will have to teach your pup from scratch put the newspapers down in the middle of your kitchen when you know your pup wants to go to toilet put the pup on the paper if the pup moves of put pup bavk on paper she will soon get to relaize se has to use the paper after a few weeks of you getting her to use the papers start slowly moving the papers nearer the back door once you have accomplished this you can then start to put pup outside for wees and such ands she will soon relaize that the garden is for doing her little jobs and not the papers anymore but by all means never raise your voice to your pup is she misses the papers.

5th question{booster jabs}
beings your pup has had her first jabs you must now get in touch with your vets and register when you go to do this take the papers and pup along with you so vet can check her out and he will then send you a reminder on when your pup is due for her next jab but by all means do not let your pup near any other dog as she is not vaccinated against all prone diseases.

6th question{crying}
all pups cry as they are away from there siblings and feel lost and isolated its a new world for them being in there own company put a blankert in with her a soft toy leave a low light on so shes not in the dark when you put pup into crate walk away but keep speaking to here this will reasure her that you are not far away keep doing this and leave the times longer of leaving her she will soon get used to you not being there but by all means no shouting at the pup is she crys.
7th question{spots}
i cant really give you an answer t=for this one but if i was you get your pup to the vets to have her checked out only the vet can tell you what they are.

8th question{soap}
by all means do not use palmolive soap on your pup or any other human soap pups and dogs have there own specially made for them tea tree is an excellent shampoo to use .

i hope i have answered some of your questions for you.
also what is your pups name:)

Such a pretty baby you have there. Good answers blueboys to all questions, I agree totally, on everything. Good advice to the young one. I like Bella too !! Having a new puppy is a challenge, but you will never find a more loyal friend than a dog !! Good Luck !! PS- the little spots may be the curly hair balled up against her skin. That breed of dog has such curly hair, and they need lots of grooming. Could be wrong, so I would do as blueboys suggests, take her to a vet, she has to go anyway for her shots.

Would you know when approx she needs her second set of shots? I know she needs to get spaded at around 6-9 months

I think at this point you should call a vet to answer all your questions. You seem to have a lot of them, and the best advice would come from a vet. You should get established with a good vet anyway, for the future. You will need one from time to time for your new pup. Your pup will need 3 sets of shots up until she is about 3 months old. Your vet can tell you how often. Then after all her initinal shots are done, you won't have to have her vacinated but once a year. There are lots of shots that dogs need yearly to keep them healthy and ward off diseases. You should start her on heart worm preventative too early on. The vet can tell you that too. Just make sure you find a good vet. Ask around for a good one. Word of mouth is usually the best way. And when you go to their office, you will be able to tell if they are any good or not, your gut will tell you. Look around, and pay attention to the staff and how they treat the animals, and your puppy. You will know then if he is the one for you and your dog. Good Luck to you, and keep in touch. ;)Would you know when approx she needs her second set of shots? I know she needs to get spaded at around 6-9 months

I just thought that since this lad was so young, and had so many questions, that a vet would be his best bet for answers. Doesn't sound like he's had a puppy before, and will continue to have a lot of questions. You gave him very good advice, but I feel he will have lots more questions. And, he does need a vet for the little one. Good Luck Bryan, enjoy your little one, they are so special !!!

hey,
I saw your post about your puppy crying in her crate. my german shepherd did that...only she howled all night long!!! we got a can, put pennies (or rocks) in it, and put it in a sock; everytime she'd cry we'd bang it on the cage...after a couple nights of doing this she was soon quite. i now have a pomeranian puppy who will also cry...i do the same thing w/ her. you also have to ignore your dog if its crying (in the crate)... u need to show her your the boss (leader of the pack). when i put my pom in his crate he'll cry and i just bang on it once and then ignore him... and he is getting much better!! if you take your puppy out when it cries its gonna cry all the time b/c it knows you will take it out. i put my pom in his crate at 11 and he wakes up at 7.45 (crying) b/c he needs to pee... when they are puppies you have to get up early and let them out to pee. he's crying cuz he has to potty so after 5 min of him not crying ill take him out and let him potty. then i let him sleep on the bed w/ me until 10 which is when i get up and feed him. also try getting a toy (thats rubber) and put a treat inside....it will keep your dog occupied for hours!!! you can get this at any big petstore
potty training: poms are hard to potty train so i was worried when i got mine. the first 2 days all he did was pee and poo everywhere so i did research and went to petsmart and talked to their dog trainer. this is what you have to do: puppies need CONSTANT super-vision! your pup will have to pee after naps and play-time. if he pees on the floor yell NO!!! when you see your pup about to go potty, clap your hands really loud (it will startle him) then quickly pick him up and put him on the newspaper. if he potties there praise him w/ your voice and a treat. wee wee pads are the best to use b/c they are scented so you dog will want to pee there. also go buy a odor remover for your floor b/c your puppy will continue to pee in the same places b/c he can smell he's gone there. if she doesnt pee there and walks away put her in her crate for about 5 min and then take her out and put her on the pad. i got my pom thursday and he is already potty trained (its tuesday). best of luck!!! have anymore questions you can e-mail me!!! stennick17@yahoo.com
oh yea: you need to confine your dog to one space!! like the kitchen, living room or bedroom and have his weewee pad there.

What type of food are you feeding your puppy? it sounds like she may have a food allergy thats causing her hot spots. Science Diet, Iams, and most other common brands of dog food all have wheat and corn in them, which are common allergens. NutroUltra and Blue Buffalo are two all natural, human grade brands that have no by-products, corn, or wheat. they broth have small breed foods.

Thanks everyone! well I have trained her to pee and poo on newspaper without anymore accidents :)

There seems to be a problem with her biting her self tho, one time she kept biting her ear until it started bleeding so we took her to the vet and we put the thing over her head so she cant scratch/bite her ear but she still always bites he little feet

She no longer sleeps in the crate as she doesn't even want to go on, so she just sleeps in a confined room, which I hope is good as well
