All dogs are great, but if you go to the river, and the park a lot, the why do you want a dog with long hair. If they get in the water, the hair just matts up, and you have a mess later. High energy dogs are ones like Jack Russell's. They require a lot of attention though, because they are so hyper. Little Dachshunds are great. They addapt to most any situation, and you can get them in long hair too. They like the water pretty well. I have one, and have had 2 others in the past. Great little dogs. Don't know any breeders in California, since I am in Kentucky. Good Luck !!

Hi again....... Dachshunds are not shy, they are very outgoing dogs. Wonderful pets too, very loyal to their owners. Low maintence, not much to do to keep them up. I paid $300.00 for my little one. She's beautiful. That's about the going rate around here, Kentucky, for a good breed of dog. You can get them cheaper depending on where you live I'm sure. I have some pics of her in the puppy gallery, so you can take a look at her if you like. Her name is Sugar. I have her name there underneath her pictures. She's a little older now, but they still look like her. She's a little over 3 months old now. Long haired dogs do take lots more time as far as grooming, but, if you are willing to do it, then go for it. They tend to shed more too. I have had all kinds of dogs in the past, and they are all wonderful. Not sorry I had any of them, they make our lives so much fuller !! Nice to talk to you !! Have a great day, and good luck on picking a dog that suits you !! ;)

Hi there!
Congrats on deciding to get a dog! I agree big time with Sugars KY Mama, beware that you are in for some big time daily grooming if you get a long haired dog and he/she is in the water alot. I have a wonderful little German Shepherd/Cattle dog mix...she looks just like a 40 pound German Shepherd, her coat is 100% German Shepherd with the undercoat of a cattle dog. She lives in the pond and the doggie pool...and I have to detangle and brush her several times a day....in summers, I hate to admit it, but she is going to get shaved from now on, or a close trim...I have done nothing but cut knots out of her, she gets wet and then dries and it's just a mess....ready to try human detangler on her...so I have no choice but to cut at her...I actually gave her a very nice short cut...especially the belly, tail, and rear end...in the rear she is skin close...again, no choice in that one by the time I got the knots out of her....so just make sure you realize and understand you will be commited or the poor dog will be miserable. Knots are horrible for a dog and they can cause lots of pain and misery, especially close to the skin, and it is amazing how quickly they get skin tight. I wonder if you have looked at Australian Cattle dogs? They have LOTS of energy, short water resistant coats and are a blast to play with! Good luck!

Why don't you get on the web and look at the dog rescue shelter sites in your area. They usually have many breeds and mixes that really need homes and it gives you a chance to help.
Right now I have an Anatolian Shepard I got after my Rott passed away. Went to the rescue shelter while they were closed and peeked thru the gate. This big head was staring me in the face like saying Hi! what do you want?
Went back when they opened and went into the yard with @20 dogs. He walks up like "you're back?" Love at first sight. The previous owner did not know how large and hard-headed Toni's could be.
Best dog I've ever had.
Sorry to ramble on, but please check out the shelters before you see a breeder.

I will have to agree with clowndino about the shelters. There are so many dogs out there that need a good home. I also wish you would check out the shelters. I wish sometimes I had the time and the room to go get some myself from the shelter. I admire people who do rescue work, they are very special people.

Fabulous recommendation guys! I have gotten several dogs from rescues, mostly Rhodesian Ridgebacks, but the best dogs ever! I have a total of 5 dogs, 1 from a RR Rescue, and the others all strays in bad shape...best dogs I have ever had...it's like they know you saved them and are just thankful as can be! Too many great dogs already in need of a home! If you go through a rescue or shelter, you will also have resources at your hand anytime you need them for advice, or if you suddenly can't care for them they can always go back, in fact most rescues have you sign a waiver that you will return them to the rescue instead of giving them away! GOOD LUCK!

I completely agree with you myself...but sometimes things happen, family members get sick or die or jobs change and you have to move...myself I couldn't. Even when I got divorced and worked crazy hours to keep the roof over our heads, I never considered it...had a dog door installed and even though I was living on tuna and mac and cheese....my 2 dogs still got their Pedigree Large Breed and their treats...I would go hungry before I allowed them to miss a meal...they are my family and there is always a way in my mind to stay together and keep everyone's belly full! I must admitt by parents were a big help too...they love their "grand children" and would go by the house and check on them and play fetch with them too...I was lucky they just lived a few blocks away.:)

Laso's are great, but do require a lot of grooming. But, very pretty breed. Be sure you are up to having it taken to the groomer often. Can get expensive. Good Luck !!
