Hi and welcome. I am also new, but could not resist posting to this one. I have five lovely Cavaliers. Now for the long or short of it.
Cavaliers are very social animals. They need to be with their people. They do best in a home where someone can be with them most of the time. If you sit, be prepared to have a lap warmer as they love to snuggle with you. They do shed. I affectionately call my my burglar helpers. They will give one bark, but if you pet them, they will gladly share your house with anyone!! My five all find the best place to be is cuddled up on the couch with one of my children or husband or myself. They do need grooming on a regular basis, but it does not involve trimming as they are a "natural" breed. You brush but do not trim their coat (unless a mat appears that is too hard to brush out).
Cavs are known to have Mitral Valve Disease. Many are born with heart murmers, so a good breeder who does health clearances and is willing to show their health clearances are a must if you purchase one of these dogs. They can live up to their late teens if they are in good health. They also are known for eye problems, and patella problems. An excellent site is the AKC as they tell all the problems. Another site is www.dogsindepth.com They also have info on Cavs.
If you are looking to purchase a Cav please please do your research and find a reputable breeder! I paid the price, I purchased a pup from a breeder who had all the answers you want to hear, but I later found out was a puppy mill breeder. These puppy's are usually sick or have diseases that end in heartbreak for you!!
Hope this helps! If you have any more questions please feel free to ask!! I will keep checking back to see if you have asked any more.
