Are you looking for a companion who is well behaved? If so look through the shelters for an older dog who has been surrendered with no behavioral issues and strong training.
Are you looking for an assistance dog to assist your father in day to day tasks? If so contact either Top Dogs USA, Delta Society or Assistance Dogs International. Delta and ADI both maintain listing of trainers in your area. Top Dogs is a great program that provides, trains and certifies assistance dogs and are located in Arizona I believe.
Are you looking for a helper dog who can assist with basics at home but isn't going to be needed 24/7 in public and at home? If so consider checking out the local shelter and assistance dog rejects from reputable programs and hooking up with a local trainer to help. You will want a younger dog but one who is at least 2 years old for smaller breeds and 3 years for the larger one.
