Hey guys,

I'm looking to get a new puppy, and I want to make sure I don't run into the same problem my parents did. They are avid speed boaters (as I am), but they can't bring their Dalmatian on the boat because she freaks out. Are there any breeds that are better or worse suited to being in boats?

Thanks a lot!

I've heard Schipperkes enjoy being on boats, though I must admit I've never heard of any dog "freaking out" on a boat. Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot!Randy I raise Cheeesapeake Bay retrievers and they are famously good on boats and around the water. They are excellent swimmers and love the to swim sometimes spending hours in the water if they can.Any dog needs to be trained for what you are using it for, no matter what breed it is. It has always amazed me that some think a dog should not need trainning when we are expecting the dog to do something new or that they have not done before. You can of course train almost any dog to do something,it is just a matter of how much work it may take to do so . That is why the choice of animals that are somewhat more likely to be able to do what is you want is a good idea. They are not only eaisier to train but will also probsbly love it also. Sue Brown and the Wildwood bunch.

i agree with sue. training the dog to be accustomed to boats is a major point. dogs that are naturally in love with water would be easiest to get used to boat rides because they love water and being around it. a lot of retrievers are great water dogs. flat-coated, curly-coated, labradors, chesapeakes, etc. good luck! let us know when you've got a pup at home!
