Hi, my anatolian shepherd is just over 3 months old now and he is constantly scratching and gnawing on himself. we have put defend on him so he has been treated for fleas and ticks. Any suggestions on what might be the problem?

Hello Again Jake,
I have the same issue with my Anitolian Shepard. All you need to do to help him/her is a good brushing. . I was woried about it at first and took her to our vet. We were told she needs a good brushing 2-3 times a week. since we started this she has stopped itching as much <exept after a long walk> The heat seems to make her itch more.

no matter what, take her to the vets just in case...she might have developped skin irritation due to the heat(thats what happened with mine)
I have taken him to the vet, they said his skin looks good, but I had recently changed dog foods and they figure he might be allergic to it. Not sure so I changed food and we will see how it goes.

My 2-yr old beagle has the same problem - constantly scratching and gnawing on himself. Vet gave us Temaril-P pills which helped for a while but the itching has returned. Any ideas? Vet confirmed that he doesn't have fleas etc. Thanks, Larry
We found out in the end that it was the dog food that he was allergic to. So we switched dog food brands and it took a couple of weeks for him to stop but he has not itched since then. The brand that he was a purina brand...

Sometimes itching can also be the weather change or if you give them a bath to often and are not using the right shampoo. Just a thought.

go to your vet and find out if he is allergic to any product in his food. a common food allergy is WHeat, which most non-holistic have. check the ingredients list on your dog food bag and if it has it, try a food that doesn't. (nutroUltra, Blue Buffalo, and Natures Recipe are all wheat free)

Thanks siberianhusky101 I didn't not know that. My pup has been itchy and everything else I'm doing right so maybe I need to check her food. :) thanks!

What kind of food does your dog eat? There is a hypoallergenic diet your vet should know about that is fed for 3-4 weeks. If symptoms improve during this time, it could diagnose a food allergy.
It could also be an inhalant allergy. It's diagnosed in the vet clinic by ID testing or serum tests.
There are different antibiotics, antifungals, & steroids available as well as shampoos that can treat skin problems. Your vet should be able to steer you in the right direction.
