I have an 8 mos old Pembroke Corgi tri. His name is Bearnard because he is "bold as a bear" and has been since we brought him home. He is very loving, fun and very smart. Recently however he has become extremely protective/possessive of me. He will attack other dogs at the dog park or other dogs that come around me at home if a neighbors dog comes near. How do I break him of this? I give him time outs. I put him on his side and hold him at the neck. I have kept him leashed to me so I can keep it from happening but..........
Any advice? I am as stubborn as him so if it is a war of will I hope I can win :p

these are dogs initially bred for herding cattle and sheep with a strong protective component. the best way to avoid this is by exposure at an early age to other dogs with positive reinforcement to discourage fear of strangers
some experts believe the imprinting must occur as early as 12 weeks
I would expose him to other dogs and when he shows hostility secure him to something and continue playing with the "stranger" as soon as he displays a drop in hostility reward him with praise
good luck! herding dogs can have a very strong protective instinct

Yeah I have socialized him from as soon as he had all his shots and I am really working with him. Cleo is not an Alpha and so she never went through this phase. I just want to make sure I am consistant. Thanks for the help!
