I thought this would be an interesting general dog discussion.
Cross breeds means two purebreds bred to make a new dog. ie: lab/poodle.
It's three am here, should be in bed lol. What do you perfer out of them?
Whats your thoughts, feelings, etc on these three catagories? (sp?)
I love all dogs, purebreds, cross breeds, mixies. That's Me  :p ;) :D

Hey Chrystal.
Actually, I can't choose!!! I love purebreds (well, who doesn't ?! LOL) Purebreds were the original ones who started it all, I mean.
Cross breeds are also cool, they brought us lots of cute breeds, like the Long Haired Chihuahua and other dogs.
Mixies can be good, but only if the mixture is good. For example, I wonder what would happen if you mixed a Puli with, say, an English Bulldog. Would that be pleasant???
Great topic. Lots of debate.

I love them all but most of my dogs have been mixes, and I loved them all. I had a crossbreed of Elk hound and black lab that was one of the best I ever had, and now have a Shephard/ Akita who is also wonderful. But if you think about it almost all the breeds today have been crossbred into new akc breeds, and that makes them all mutts in my book. I think we've bred way to many health problems into our pets today. I've had pure shephard and a pure cocker spaniel in the past. I loved them the same as the mixes.
The biggest thing I've found is that females are usually easier to manage than males, regardless of breed.
We were laughing the other day though at the thought of two dogs at my house breeding. They would make some UGLY puppies. The female is a beagle/? mix and the other one we're still trying to identify. I think it's some kind of terrier.

i have a pure-bred golden retriever at home along with a mix (lab-shepard-husky mix). I can't say I like either one better. They are SO much opposite it's funny. My Golden is racking up at 112 lbs and could just lay around all day if he could (my mom is famous for giving the dogs table scraps and it's really adding up...this is the first time she has ever had to put her dog on a strict diet and exercise regiment :) ). My mix is athletic and fit and loves to run around and play. He's a great watch dog too, as opposed to the Golden who would just lay there and wag his tail if an intruder ever came in!

Well, unless the breeder is very good about checking all of their breed's disorders, mutts are healthier. Ex: German shepherds have a lot of hip problems, (unless the breeder only breeds hip-checked dogs) but shepherd mixes don't have any. (relatively speaking)
Cross breeds (or designer breeds) are mutts, so no difference there.
Also, there is no such thing as a "bad" mix. When talking about mutts, you can't say there is an ugly one because they aren't bred for beauty. And, people make dogs bad tempered, so "bad" mixes aren't born "bad".
I love purebreds, but there are so many in shelters that I can't justify breeding unless you are furthering the breed. (temperament, health, conformation) Many of my pooches have been purebred, but I got them all from high kill shelters where they were about to be killed and couldn't have been happier.

i hate it when pple stereotype them as bad just becoz of their mix...anything mixed with a pittbull is considered bad and dangerous but ive met/seen some very sweet, gentle and caring pittbulls

I agree with Rescueadog about mutts being healthier. We breed purebred Boykin Spaniels as well as Braque Francais... however, we've just had a litter of Boykin Francaise (unplanned). They're cute as can be (and for sale) and should make excellent hunting, as well as family, dogs. Because both gene pools are small, we hope these pups will be superior to our purebreds.

I have mixed feelings about this....
I applaud the top breeders for being conscientious in trying to bring out the top qualities and not breeding genetic issues. Having stated this MOST breeders out there are not top breeders and are just looking at breeding for the income and will breed for looks and merge family members thereby causing problems that will come out a few generations later. EG/ Porteguese Water Dogs were almost gone and I know breeders that merged a 4th generation family member to bring back the breed.......issues are seen 2 generations later. Look at the Irish Setter.....once an intelligent hunting dog..........the brains were breed out of this breed many, many years ago. Though a sweet dog, it's too bad as it was an awesome dog in it's history.
Also, in regards to the comment about keeping original breeds.........lets be truthful.......there are few originals left. Look at how many new breeds have been created. Just look at how many originated from the mastiff.....I'm sure close to 8+ different breeds are now registered with the AKC that were 'created' by mixed breeding and this exists with many of the breeds we now call 'pure' breeds.
Having stated that I believe 'unless' you wish to enter the show ring......you are really looking for an extension of your family; a pet. Then I recommend the humane society...keeping in mind the most noticable breed in the dog and it's probable characterictics (ie/ high activity, size, protectiveness, etc). I believe a dog develops based on his characteristic as determined by the breed and the quality of owner. The owner being the operative factor.
Some people should just not have dogs. This is not a toy to show off or get bored with, or just a play thing........this is a 15-18 year commitment and should be entered into only by responsible people.
We don't return our kids if they are not pretty and not top acheivers...I believe we should love our pets with the same unconditional love. In summary, I would like to see original breeds bred and kept as they are/were and I would like to see pets neutered/spayed...........if you want a pet, rescue a mixed breed!

I love all dogs i have had mixed as well as purebred and i don't think there is such thing as a bad mix necessarily i think there can be bad combinations i once new a litter of dalmation/ sharpie mixed the breeds by themselves are great but sometimes combining them can cause problems i say this b/c the entire litter ended up being on prozac but i have a pit bull mix right now that is awesome i have a flat coat retriever mix i had a Australian shepherd/cattle dog mix ( the best dog ever) i had a golden retriever mix i had a cool purebred cocker and a lab all great dogs. the only problem i have is the fact that people are now breeding mutts i now alot of people like labradoddles and goldendoodles and i am sure they make great pets but to me they are Mutts and all it is doing is giving puppy mills a licence to breed mutts to make more unwanted pets frankly i think if breeders can get away with breeding mutts and selling them for thousands of dollars the shelters are full of designer dogs they should charge the same thing prices

Hello!
I agree with all! lol...I love both and have had both, really only purebred I have had are Rhodesians...but what a wonderful breed...I am stuck on them! You guys also know that I have sucker above my door and somewhere on my car that only animals can see...so I have lots of mixes...love everyone of them. Though, about the health issues I wholeheartedly agree...but can't speak on experience, just what I have heard! Never had issues with my RR, both ripe old ages, now my rescues...even Dr Glass wonders if anything without issues will ever follow me home!! LOL! Probably the best mix I have is a German Shepherd/Cattle dog mix, Chloe...great watch dog, raises the roof, but waits to judge anyone by how we react....great with kids and other animals, great inside and outside...though she has that free independent spirit and will spend 2-3 days on the property and not come in...she is also happy to spend weeks on end in the house playing with the cats and following me around...she has a great smile and is quite the "talker"...so I can't say either are better or worse...depends on the dog! lol! My lab mix...he is just...well..."Moose"...a love, a playful and obiediant beast and 95 lbs of love and he does take his retrieving very seriously...great with kids, and actually very defensive of me...not overly so though..but he HATES water...not sure what he is mixed with...but it took 1 yr to turn him into that, previous he was just 95 lbs of knock ya down, constant wiggeling and destruction..point is...once he got the love, discipline, and whatever else he needed, he chilled right out...and before her seriously hurt anyone...so, I really think it all depends on the dog and how you raise them...okay, long enough...sorry!
Take care all and great topic!:)

As you all know, with purebreds you are getting more of a "known quantity" than with Cross Breeds or Mixes. That makes them a better choice for newbies.
As someone else mentioned, some Cross Breeds like Labradoodles are also "known quantities" and make great pets for families (although feeding your poodle beer achieves the same result).
The mixes can be a challenge, but I can't tell you how many times I have heard folks say, "Best dog I ever owned was a mix." But those were also usually people who really knew how to be with dogs. My mother is a Dr. Doolittle type, so I spent the first 20 years of my life with every kind of mix... try doxidoxicockerpoo. Shrewdest creature in the barnyard and untrainable.

I love purebreds or mixes, but I don't think novice breeders should purposely breed two purebreds. I know there is some demand for this, but unfortunately alot of these dogs end up in shelters just like other mixes. I think breeding should be left to professionals and not to folks wanting to show their children the miracle of birth. Tyler

I tend to like purebreds. They're just a more predictable package than mix-breds. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with mix-breds, some of the funnest dogs I've come across have been mix-breds, but I just prefer the predictability of purebreds.

I think mixed breeds are at times some of the smartest dogs around. I have had lots of mixed breeds in the past, and they are good companions, smart ones, or at least the ones I had were. I guess some of them could be not so smart, but if you ask me, I think all dogs are smart. But, what do I know, I just love all dogs. They look at me with those sweet eyes, and I melt. They could get anything they wanted out of me, LOL !! I have a pure bred dog now, little Dachshund, and she's smart as a whip, so, I don't know the answer to the question, just think they're all smart I guess. Great topic to get me thinking !! Thanks !!

me i like pure breds but have had a mongrel in the past and she was a beauty i just dont see why some breeders have to make a new dog by mixing two breeds with different tempraments let a dog be a dog mixing sometimes works and sometimes dont you have to be so careful ive never really liked liked the idea of mixing breeds to get a dog which half and half and then they choose the name

I love all dogs, mixed or purebred. I have 8 and only 2 are purebreds....border collie and pharaoh hound. The others are cross breeds but only because an unwanted father-to-be jumped the fence. LOL. Oops, I tell a lie. Gus was a pet shop dog....bichon x shih tzu....abandoned by his owners. I am not a believer of selling dogs in pet shops, hate to see those little faces pressed up against the glass. Also, they seem to ask more than you would pay for a pure bred pup. Will never understand that.

Hi, I believe that to deliberately mix purebred dog breeds is wrong. We have too many unwanted and abandoned dogs now to introduce questionable new mix dogs. I love dogs and really love the smaller sized dogs. I currently breed and raise mini dachshunds, various colors and coat types and that is as far as I will ever go in mixing up the dogs :). I have had mixed breed dogs in the past and they have been great as pets. I stumbled onto the mini doxies almost by accident, but once we had our first litter of puppies, I was completely and hopelessly in love with the breed. I currently have three 8 week old pups and a mama getting ready to whelp any time now and I look forward to this litter with the same anticipation as I did with the very first one. I saw an advertisement about doxies in a pet store and almost cried. Pet stores are almost 100% supplied their animals by brokers who get their animals from puppy mills and that is wrong, wrong, wrong. Sorry to have rambled on a bit here, but I really do like this topic lol.

Hello everyone!
I agree with most, too many unwanted dogs in the world, very sad that pounds and rescues overloaded...on that note you could put almost any breeder in a bad light. Really, I love all dogs...never have met a mean or unruly one that was purebred or mut....I hate to sound like Ceasar Milan sooo much...but he speaks the truth! I swear anyone with a crew of over 3 can relate to what he says...Ergo, point...I know, I don't mean to ramble...any dog can be good, bad, or schizo...it's our jobs and responsibility to mold a pup into a well rounded and sane 4 legged "child". It takes a balance of discipline, love, devotion, and fun. I have had a variety of muts and purebreds, I have run into issues with each...point, everyone of them came around with time. I love purebreds too, but whenever I think of getting another one, I go through the pounds and shelters online...just to remind me that there are soooo many dogs facing death in a matter of days if they do not find a home...and for as much as I love Ridgebacks, I know that purebred dogs will find a home more quickly than those on "death row" for lack of a better word...It's a hard choice...I am lucky that each one in my crew of 5 have found me or "saved" me and I didn't have to go looking! I hope I didn't offend anyone or sound to preachy...It is just my opinion, and trust me, I know what opinions are like! LOL...everyone have a good night!:D
