weird but effective way to get your dog to come when called

my friend, who knows way too much about dogs, just showed me this little trick that he's using with his new bulldog puppy.

feeding time makes his dog go crazily happy, so every time he feeds the dog he stands behind it and says its name a bunch. not so much that it starts to lose meaning, but things like, "is that food good, chopper?" "are you having a good time here, chopper?" "who's a good boy, chopper?" you get the idea.

sometimes he says it in an excited voice and sometimes in a regular voice. the end result is that his dog gets really happy and excited whenever it hears its name. i was at the park with him and his dog a couple weeks ago and he couldn't call it back to save his life. now he just says the name and the dog goes right to him!

that's a really good way to get your dog to recognize its name and come when called. another idea that i used for my dog to learn to come was my friend and i sat on opposite sides of our living room with treats and took turns very enthusiastically and excitedly saying: "cooper come here! what a good boy, come here cooper!" and everytime he came to the person calling, he got a little treat. at first he didn't quite understand but then once he got the hint, he was on it. he started to just run from the person calling him to get his treat and then run right back to the other before he was called so we made sure not to give him a treat when he did that and only to give him one when he came when called. it was fun, we sat there for like 20 minutes a day doing that and he got it really quick.
