I am looking for suggestions on training my 6 mos. old partially blind dog. She is a little shy around kids. Does anyone think it is too late to get her to like children? I want to make it possible for her to be socialized as much as possible. Has this window of opportunity closed or is there still hope? She knows basic training commands like sit, come, easy, slow, fetch and is very receptive to all other kinds of training so far. I recently moved into a house and the neigbor watches a little girl who really likes Sasha. She is about 7 yrs old and wants to get aquainted. The apartment I lived at had lots of little kids and she would freak out anytime they came near here. I want to make it a safe environment for both. I know she responds well to treats and we spend about 7 min. this morning trying to get her to accept that the kid is their and she just growled. This is from about four feet away. I was wondering if I just kept working her a little closer if eventually anyone thinks it will work. Or do you think that maybe she will freak out. by the dog signs. I have never had a partially blind dog before.

I have never had a partially blind dog ever either, but I can take a wild guess on how you can train it. I don't think its too late to make it like children, but it may take a little more time. I think that you should have Sasha on a leash, and the little girl about 3 feet (or more) away, and let the girl call Sasha repeatedly in a nice, trustworthy voice. Maybe even give Sasha compliments, like "Good Girl" or something like that. If Sasha is showing a bit more trust, maybe have the girl stand like, 2 feet away (or more, if you are uneasy) and put Sasha's food near the girl. This way, if Sasha wants food, Sasha has to accept going near to the girl. Have Sasha on a leash while doing this, and reel her in at any signs of aggresiveness.

Hope I helped,
Jakey
