Our allergies to a dog

My wife and I would like to bring home an Australian Shephard puppy. We had him at the house overnight and we both ended up having scratchy throats. We don't want to have to take medicine for the next however-many years the dog is with us. Are there things we can do to reduce the allergies we have towards the dog? I know about giving baths, but not sure what to bathe the dog with. Are there products out there that make a difference?
