Hello fellow pet owners:

I wanted to say hello and I have a few questions I hope someone can answer or get me "pointed" in the right direction. I am the proud owner of an English Setter that is 4 years old and a female. She was given to my grilfriend and I a few years back. We contacted the previous owner about her vet records and if she had any AKA papers. The previous owner would not give us any info. I would like to get a pup from her and was wonder what I should do or where to start. Any info would be much appreciated.

Do you have any information on the breeder where your female came from?

luv4gsds,

thanks for the reply but unfortunately, I do not have any breeder info. The lady we got her from lost her dog (our dog's brother) about a year after we got Piper. She called us asking if she could have Piper back. Of course once there is a bond, forget it. I don't know if she was still mad we would not give Piper back or if she did not want us to profit on pups from Piper.

AKC (if that is the one you are asking about) has a place on their website where you can look up dogs.

Research Pedigree (Online Only)
http://www.akc.org/store/reports/index.cfm

You have to register to be able to look dogs up. But the registration is free. You just have to pay for the pedigree if you want it.

You probably could try adding your dog name and breed and see what you come up with.

Are you looking for the papers because you want to breed her? Sorry in advance if I sound harsh, but if you don't know her parents, don't know what breeder she came from, and don't have any way of knowing what issues run in her lines, I really suggest you either adopt a puppy from a shelter or find a reputable breeder. There are so many things that can go wrong when you breed a dog that it really pays to find a reputable breeder who will be able to help you through the process of selecting a stud, taking care of the dog through pregnancy and raising puppies. Again, this is going to sound rude, but if your little girl doesn't have anything going for her besides the fact that she is a good companion, she probably should be spayed and not bred. There are millions of good companions dying in shelters every day because people want a puppy out of their dog. According to the AKC, over half the dogs registered today are bred by people who only ever had one litter. Please, reconsider breeding her. You will not profit. If you are doing everything necessary to breed, you will either lose money or break even, if there are no complications. If there are complications, you risk losing the litter and possibly your little girl.
