Help!!! I have a 2 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. Beautiful, very intelligent, Therapy dog, a wonderful pet EXCEPT she drives us nuts when we are preparing to go out.She starts getting restless and she watches every move and then as I proceed to put on my makeup she starts to bark. When I reach for my shoes, she gets louder and by the time I grab my purse she is off the chart with incessant yipping. We have tried so many things, ignoring her, scolding her, giving her treats if she happens to stop long enough to take a breath. Don't suggest dressing in the garage or putting on my makeup in the car and yes, we do take her places. Help !!!

My recommendation for an "eager" dog is to go put it in the car first, then return to applying your makeup in peace. Our dog loves to sit and keep track of the neighborhood from the back of the car as it's parked in the driveway... it relaxes her because she thinks she's going too. Don't forget to roll down the windows a bit.
When it comes time to leave... well if she's not going then just put her back in the house and give her dinner or a treat. Either way you are free of the piercing stares and frantic hysteria as you prepare for your outing.

Aw, a therapy pup, I think thats awesome, I do not have advice for you, but you reminded me with you'r question, that one of my Mastiff's talks almost all the time, some times it is really cute, cause he says I love you mama, alot it cracks you up really , but other times you just want to duct tape his lips (not really I am joking here people), but just had to chuckle at you'r pup, although I KNOW how annoying it can get at times, good luck with it! :D

I have found that once they come to find that you have a routine they start to anticipate what is happening. BEFORE you start to get dressed to go, place her in her crate with a treat and walk away! Then go get dressed. If she is going with you once you are ready, do get her and go to the car. If she is not going with you, either leave her crated if you will not be gone long and she is fully safe in the house or let her out, give her a second treat and leave! Do not prolong your leave taking or she will start acting up again!
She has associated you getting dressed with leaving with or without her. She will settle down if you don't give her extra attention once you have crated her.
My 18 month female did the same thing to me when I was getting ready to leave to coach gymnastics. As soon as she seen my sweat suit come out she started crying and running in circles round my feet and eventually started trying to pull my sweat pants away from me. Once I did the crate thing, she straightened out. It was hard the first little while as she did cry in her crate!!
Hope this helps!!
