Anyone have any tips on how to train a dog to be better behaved around guests? I have a 2-year old golden retriever who is great 90% of the time. Around me and familiar family, he is very well-behaved. However, anytime new people come to the house, he gets CRAZY overactive. He gets lots of exercise and I have even gotten in the habit of taking him on very long walks if I know we're having guests over. He is so calm the rest of the time, but at 110 lbs. is almost unmanagable around unfamiliar people. Of course, he's not aggressive, just overly friendly. Any tips?? :)

You could keep treats around your house where the guests can get to them, but the dog can't. Ask them to give the dog a treat every time he is calm and sitting for them to pet him. Have them to try their best to ignore the dog when he is being rude and reward him with petting or treats every time he keeps his feet on the floor. If this doesn't work, you might just have to crate him until he calms down.

How much of basic obedience training and socializing has your golden have? Can you give a little more detail of how your dog is with house guest?

Hi Beth374. I agree with Fuzzdomestic. We have a 1 1/2 yr old Black Lab, Sadie, who gets very overactive when ANYONE is over. We have to crate her when our friends with very small children come. Sometimes Sadie does not know how big she is. Whenever we come home and when guests come.. we ignore her until she calms down. Then we greet her.
This technique is very helpful because they soon realize that they will not get acknowledged or noticed (ok thats impossible..LOL) until they calm down. When they do calm, greet them hello and a treat is always welcomed.

i had the same problem with one of my dogs, i got my trainer to teach me how to deal with this...when all else failed he suggested i put on his leash and tie him somewhere in the living room or where the guests would be...in that way, he would not be isolated but he would only have little room to move around...reinforce ur decision by giving him orders like sit and stay but thats only if he has basic training if he hasnt i suggest he gets some or it could get really annoying for u
