You'll want a tough dog that will be able to hold its own if it gets into a fight with a boar. A dog with a good nose is another good trait to have. I have a German Shorthaired Pointer and they are excellent and versatile hunting dogs. While they can be used for boar, it would probably be best to use some of the more popular boar hunting dogs which are:

Ridgebacks
Pit Bulls
Deerhounds
Catahoulas
American Bull Dogs

Try looking into those and pick which you like best.

I know of a guy who uses Pits, I personally do not like the dogs but they will not let go. Wild Boar can be very dangerous. the Ridgeback is a great dog too. You also need to factor in what kind of environment the dog will be in the rest of the time.

If you have small children a Pit may not be a good choice, You will not be using the dogs for hunting all the time. If you do not have the time to work them, you need a dog that will be o.k. with occasional workouts and attention.

Most of the guys I know in Texas that use dogs for hog hunting use the black mouth cur.

dogo argentino.
presa canario.
american bulldog.

these are very hard dogs with great speed and agility and great jaws..that wont let go so easy and are able to bring down BIG game...

my buds presa in texas is 9 months old and took down a 260lb boar that put a hole in his rear end with its tusk, and it never let go.

can you please tell me why a pit is not good choice around kids?

this myth that pitts are all nasty to people is stupid and needs to stop, you do know that pitbulls are one of the most people friendly dogs you can get right?

its just dumb owners that raise them to be nasty...its a fact that alot of pitbull owners actually have a second breed of dog for guarding the house because many pitbulls get stollen as they go off with anyone..especially if its a "game bred" pitbull as they are worth good $$$.

When I was a young girl around eight or so we owned a Karelian Bear Dog. My brothers used the dog to hunt wild boar. Maybe you can look into this breed to see if it fits into you life style.

How do you know that a bear dog wouldn't be tough enough. Have you owned a bear dog before? If you don't know how much a KB weight is. Bear dogs are bred to hunt and fight big bears.

I've learn enough about this breed. I also have family members how raises this breed also. By all means please don't type a lot on my account it might hurt your little itty bitty fingers.

Here you go so you might want to learn something about this breed.
This dog will put a bear to flight or attack it with great pugnacity and will sacrifice its own life for its master. Its quick reflexes and fearless nature have also made it very popular for hunting other aggressive game such as the wild boar.

Among this avid hunter's game are the buck, wild boar, hare, and moose. He is also fearless enough to fight the wolf and bear and therefore functioned as a protector by hunting these large wild animals

Survival in the harsh northern climates of our world brought man and dog together very early in history. The generic Spitz gradually evolved into a number of different breeds, each performing some task essential to the survival of man and dog. The Karelian Bear Dog is primarily used to hunt bear and elk when they are available, although they have also been used to hunt smaller animals when big game was scarce. The Karelian Bear Dog usually hunts alone rather than in packs and trails its prey silently. When the bear or other prey is located, the Karelian Bear Dog barks and worries the creature to a standstill. The devastation resulting from war nearly caused the breed to die out. In the late 1930s, the Finnish Kennel Club undertook to restore the breed and it was recognized by FCI in 1945. Today, the Karelian Bear Dog is one of the most highly regarded breeds in its native land. The Finnish Kennel Club has emphasized the importance of maintaining this breed's hunting instincts and courage as well as its smart appearance.

these dogs do not attack bears, and it would take 1 single hit from a bear to demolish this little 50lb spitz.
