Hi,
One of my friends bloodhounds got loose last night and still has not come home. Found this forum and thought I would get your feelings about it. At the moment she does not know exactly how she got loose, every thing is secure. There are a couple possibilities. Her first thought is a drainage pipe, that is about 18-20 inches diameter, but I dont think she could fit, and if she did she could not go very far, but she thinks she could have fit through it. She knows her dog better than I do. The second is a bit of a hole under the fence, again I am not so sure she could have fit under it. I could be wrong, I have never owned a dog.

The thing that has her really tore up right now is that it was very cold, 10-15 degrees last night, and it is around 30 at the moment. While I am not an owner or do I ever intend to own a dog, I dont like seeing animals hurt, I am a fish person. And with the temps last night, I am afraid I am assuming the worse, not knowing how resourceful or how they handle cold weather this breed is.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how we might proceed on possibly tracking her down some way? I have toyed with the thought of putting her male one on the leash and see if he can track her down, but he is not the brightest one in comparison to the female. I think he would just enjoy going for a walk.

Anyways, thought I would just post here and see if I could come up with some ideas. TIA

I know these are obvious suggestions, and I hope others can maybe give some more innovative ones, but I'd quickly put up fliers with a picture all over the place. Your idea of tracking her down sounds reasonable as well--have you had any luck with that? Also, it's pretty late in the week but I think you still have time to get a listing in the Sunday paper if you can. Of course it is also smart to get in touch with the SPCA or your local animal shelter in case they pick her up. A final idea is to talk to your neighbors (literally go door to door if necessary) and ask if anyone has seen her.

When I was younger our family dog (a mix we adopted from the SPCA) escaped from our back yard. We tried everything with no luck and, after about two weeks, had finally started to accept the reality that she might be gone.

One evening, however, my mom was parking in a lot downtown to get a cup of coffee. As she walked out of the lot, chatting on her cellphone, our missing dog, with a string leash tied around her neck, came blazing up to my mom. It turned out a homeless person had decided she'd make a nice pet. Anyway, the reason I mention this story is just to encourage you not to give up! Good luck! And please let us know how it turns out.

Just a bit of a lost dog story of mine that might help. The idea you had of leashing the other dog is really a good one, as for walking around to see if lost pup gets the scent or visa versa, i say this because believe it or not i had a sheltie years ago went out and got lost, (9 days) this dog was lost i was out every day and night searching, till one day he was spotted, so my son took one of my other shelties and walked miles with him from the spotting, to home, and wouldnt you know, about 6 hours later a scratch came on the front door, and there was my lost boy, he had gotten the scent of my other boy, and litterally followed that scent all the way home.
I hope your friend finds her dog, its so sad to lose a pet.
I would also put up flyers all over , with a picture etc, just in case some one has found him. Good luck, with this, I know its hard.
