My husband and I bought an 8 month old Newfoundland puppy about a week ago...we were so excited to finally have our dream dog...our water dog. We took her to the water and instead of rushing in like we thought she would...she tucked her tail and sheepishly followed us in (on leash). We tried praising her for being in...but all she wanted to do was get out. Then when bathing her...again, she was NOT happy to be in the water. We know she is a full blooded Newf...have her papers and all. Is this normal? I thought it was in their blood to love the water.

I don't know much about Newfies in particular, but some dogs just require a little more..... encouragement... to get into the water!!!
Molly still isn't totally convinced about it, but will wade in happily if her favourite ball or stick is thrown in.
I even dunked in yesterday  hoping it would encourage her to come in... didn't work, and boy was it cold!!!! :p
take it one step at a time, with lots of positive encouragement, and let us know how it goes.

I think the puppy should have more encouragement in water...and eventually she will be used to it...just wait for a right time...

she may have had a bad experience prior to you getting her. try being enthusiastic about getting into the water and give treats when she does get in, even if its ankle deep.
