Malteses are biters believe it or not. They are easily frightened and react in aggression. With work they are quite sweet, but they are nippers.
How about a pomeranian?

Pomeranian are short but quick dogs.
But they are kept just for hobbies.
They look good but not aggracive.

Hi, I'm a little biased here, but I think the perfect breed for you would be an Australian Terrier.:)
They are a small dog, love living inside, are easy to train & absolutely love people & other dogs. They are a very healthy breed, & have a low shedding coat, that is very easy to groom.
They are not very yappy, but will bark if a stranger comes to the door.
They also don't mind a small back yard, aslong as you take them for a daily walk.
So if you are after a small, easy to look after dog, that has lots of character & personality & will be your best friend for around 15 years, then the Aussie is a must for you.:)
I must warn you though, if you get one Aussie, its very hard to stop yourself from getting another one, as I can 100% assure you, you will fall in love with this little dog the minute it starts living with you.:p
I know I will never probably own another breed, after owning Aussies.
I also agree that Maltese are biters. My sister owns one, & she bites your ankles, the minute you enter the house. She is a vey evil little thing.
Any way good luck, with finding the perfect puppy for you.:D

I am going to suggest the Shar pei. They are a medium size dog are full grown by six months, also arre very loyal to their owners they don't bark unless there are strangers around (well mine do) great guard dogs, can live in an appartment or have a huge backyard a walk once a day is good for them as well.
Good luck with your search and what ever dog you choose

I would also suggest a Cocker Spaniel. They are sweet dogs, they don't shed, but do require some maintenance. I have a 7yr old cocker and he is the sweetest dog I have ever had

I would suggest Bichon Frise. They are the perfect pet for all ages and even for small children. The Bichon Frise is a small, sturdy, white powder puff of a dog whose merry temperament is evident by their plumed tail carried jauntily over their back. The Bichon's coat puffs out all over, rather than hanging down.
They are small, sturdy dogs that are slightly larger than a Maltese. Bichon Frise are bouncy, friendly dogs that will exercise with their owner to the end. They are also perky, playful and friendly to all. They are affectionate, responsive, and are apt to cuddling. They make a delightful and amusing companion.

You might consider basset hound if you prefer small type of dog ;)
