We adopted a chesapeake bay retriever today, but her previous owners shaved her hair super short except her face, tail, and paws. We don't know why they did this, and we want to make sure she will be okay or if there is anything we need to do. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

probably want to make sure she isnt in the sun long enough to burn (or i know there are also sun screen products for dogs. other than than you can talk to a groomer to see what else can be done when the fur grows back.

Oh my gosh! I bet your dog is absolutely beautiful. I have a chocolate lab and when I met the breeder up (in a hotel parking lot) someone asked if he was a Chesapeake Bay Retriever. They look very similiar to the Labrador.

Anyways, although I can't help you with the question you asked I can assist you on some info on that breed. I have a dog book that gives pictures as well as complete descriptions and backgrounds on over 300 recognized dog breeds.

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever was first developed in the 1800's. Their first use was for retrieving water fowl and they originate from the U.S.A. They are known to have a distinctive smell because of the oily texture of their coat. This breed actually evolved from two dogs rescued for a ship that ran aground off the coat of Maryland, in 1807. The two dogs were trained to retrieve duck which a skill that is refined from crossing Flat, Curly-coated Retrievers, and Otter Hounds. The Chespeake Bay Retriever also has webbed toes to assist in swimming.

Physically the dog has a tail thick at the base with some feathering, powerful hindquarters that help when swimming, harelike feet with rounded toes, thin not pendulous lips, distinctive yellow or amber eyes, and a broad round head with a medium stop. They get between 55-75 lbs, 21-26 inches in height, and their temperament is generally responsive and industrious.

Goodluck with the dog, hope I briefed you up a bit on the breed. :)
