It's almost that time of year again, and with a new shorthaired dog, I know biting, itchy flies will become a problem. I live in Canada and we have a lot of blackflies, horseflies, and mosquitoes. I have heard of people using bug spray made for horses on their dogs... does anyone have any other suggestions? I want something that will work but won't be toxic to my dog. Thanks!

There is a dog spray called "Fly off" or "Flys off" that works really well.

Thanks Suzzie... unfortunately, they don't ship to Canada, so I will check at my local pet shop

does anyone use kids' bug spray on their dog?

I don't know what you use for flea and tick protection but I switched to K9 Advantix for Gunther this year and I can vouch for its ability to repel mosquitos (not to mention I haven't found a single tick on him since switching, which was not the case when I had him on Frontline). I'm not sure if it's at all effective on flies though. I'll find out in the next few weeks. The flies here on the Cape get really aggressive mid-summer out in the woods. I'm hoping the Advantix helps keep them off Gunther. If not I'll have to look into that "Flies Off". Previous years I've simply stopped going in the woods with him when the flies were at their worst. Would be nice if I didn't have to this year.

update: I went to my local independent pet store and they had a great product called "Muskoka Woodlands Bug Splash" its even good for human use and doesn't smell bad :) its plant and food based, so it won't harm your dog if they happen to lick it. And it seems to be working well up here where our mosquitos are as big as birds ;)
