Hi, I have a rather large Sheltie (45+lbs-9 mos old) who stays in at night but has run of the back yard and breezeway during the day. Its an unheated area but Ive provided a dog house and a heated mat which isnt inside the dog house. He seems to be fine with this as so far weve had a mild winter at mid 30s and 40s. Today its about 10 degrees and Im concerned its too cold. I understand they have a well insulated coat but that only can go so far. Any advice would be appreciated. Thnx, Bill

I've always played it safe and kept my dogs inside when the weather dips into the 30s. I think most dogs would have the commons sense to come scratching at the door if they were too cold, but I always say better safe than sorry. You might want to put the pad in the doghouse (assuming that's not a fire hazard) so the dog can have an extra warm place.
