Hello (and a question)

Hi

I am new to the board so, hello everyone its nice to be here. I am currently the proud owner of a 9 year old Rottie called Hooch and a 5 ish year old Chiwauwa (or however you spell it)/Jack Russell cross called Poppy. Both were rescued from various sources.

Anyway, I have come across a picture of a dog that I have fallen in love with. Only trouble is I cannot identify the breed.

Can anyone help me out with the breed of the dog in the photo?

It could be a Tibetan Mastiff/Newfoundland mix - it's certainly a giant anyway. Maybe there's a little Saint Bernard in there as well? I'll run that photo by my dog expert friend and see what she says.

He looks like he could be a Caucasian Ovtcharka. Or he could be a Mid-Asian Ovtcharka or Tibetan Mastiff. As long as I'm at it, I'll just give you a list of fluffy flock-guard dogs. Most of them were bred for similar purposes, so they look very similar. Cane di Mannera, Estrela Mountain Dog, Carpathian Shepherd Dog, Karakachan Dog, Hovawart, Leonberger, Moscow Watchdog, Sarplaninac.

If you're interested in mastiff/molosser type dogs, you might want to head over to Molosser World, http://www.moloss.com/001/ptxt/breed.html, it's a wonderful resource for all those breeds. As a fan of Ovtcharkas, this is one of the most wonderful sites I've been able to find.

I have had a look at a few pictures and believe it to be a Tibetan Mastiff possibly with a few other bits thrown in for good measure. He certainly is handsome though.

that is a tricky one. i agree with whoever said it looks like a tibetan mastiff / newfoundland. i might add that there might be some chinese shar pei in there?

He'd be smaller if there were Shar-pei in there. Shar-peis tend to be around 45 lbs and this dog is probably at least 100, possibly edging onto 200. I can see how you'd think that though. He does look like he's got Shar-pei ears, but that's just because of the working crop.

I forgot to ask, where did you find the picture? That might help to figure out which breed he is.

I think that it is basically a Tibetan Mastiff, with some other dogs thrown in, like you said. It is a very handsome dog, Bubo. I can see why you fell in love with it! I would too, if I hadn't found my perfect little Cori.
