Hi My user name is furie4. I live outside Atlanta Ga in what some call the boonies. I share my home with a 4 year old, 75 pound, blue fawn male pit bull. I could use some feedback on the pros & cons of neutering. My boy has recently developed a STRONG DESIRE to become a man. Should I breed him before I fix him? Will breeding calm his RANDY behavior around bitches?

Breeding him may calm his behavior - neutering definitely will. It sounds like you're having some behavioral problems with the dog. If that's the problem, I think the first course of action would be to take him to a good dog training academy. Especially with PB's, it's important to instill good behavior early on, or else you will just be reinforcing the negative stereotype with an aggressive dog.

My pit bull Caesar just turned 4 in Dec. 06. For the past 3 years he and the female German Shepard next door have spent 4 out of 7 days together playing, eating and snoozing together. I let my neighbors dogs out while she is at work. I bring the female Shepard back to my house until she comes home, the dogs get along fine. My neighbor lost 2 dogs to age in oct.06 and dec.06, one female (alpha) and a male. She now has 3 female dogs left, this is driving Caesar crazy sexually. He constantly sniffs at the girls, they don't like it and I get tired of saying leave it. The Shepard that has been around him since she was a pup growled and snapped at him the other day. I believe she is assuming the alpha role in that household. Caesar just backs down and stops for awhile. All he wants to do is play and smell. This is why I asked about having him neutered. He is not aggressive towards dogs or people. I hope this helps to understand the situation.

Neutering will, of course, have a significant effect on the dog's behavior, especially with female dogs (but also in other ways).

It would be cool if we could get a reply from someone who has specific experience with Pits.. anyone?

think of it this way: he's a man. this means, his hormones will take him wherever they want and if three girls next door recently became available, he's gonna go for it. dogs dont have will power...you cant stop him and even if hes bred he will keep on wanting to spread the seed. assuming alpha position of a group means you get to breed with the women. its not a behavioral issue, its an instinct and nature issue. if you want him to lay off the girls, get him neutered.

also, an extra tidbit: this instinctual drive is why breeders keep their females in heat separated from intact males they do not plan to breed her with....they will do anything to get to her...

that being said, i'll tell you two stories: the first...my friend recently got a puppy from animal services. the puppy wasn't abandoned or neglected, his entire litter was surrendered by the owner of the mom. you see, the mom is a pure bred GSD with champion bloodlines. he has her to breed and show. when she is in heat, a neighboring dog goes crazy. for the second time, the man ended up with a litter of gsd mixes, one of them is my friend's dog. the second story...my brother has refused to get his dog fixed. on her first heat, the neighbor's border collie was found on top of a shed in the back yard trying to get over to her. on her second heat, the poor guy went so crazy he literally tore down a part of the fence that connects the yards.

they cannot be stopped. even my neutered male enjoyed following his lady friend at the park around when she was in heat for the first time...they're men. hehehe
