Hello,

I am new here.

I have a 3 year old Doberman. Who has bad cases of gas every couple of days. I mean really bad. I have tried to figure it out over the past year and a half. Everything from food to treats. I have figured out he is very sensitive to lamb. So I changed him over from Lamb based dry food to White Fish and Sweet potato. I feed him Wellness White Fish and Sweet Potato formula. It seemed to improve him. He gets an assortment of Mother Hubbard treats. I usto give him a small amount of canned food but that seems to make him worse. He will sometimes get diaharra once a month and or a spell of vomitting. I have taken him to the vet and he checks out 100% perfect health as far as they can see. No worms or parasites. We have just come to figure out that he might have a food allergy or a sensitive stomach.

Anyone else have this issue with some of the higher end dog food and treats? Is it possible that it is too rich? I have even tried putting a small amount of plain yogurt in his food, which did not seem to work. When he gets diarharra I give him a small Pepto tablet and he is okay in a day.

I cut out Rawhides and a lot of treats. Raw veggies such as carrots seem to really send him over the edge.

I am at a loss on what to try. I was thinking of changing his treats "which all seem to have carrots in them' over to a more basic milkbone dog biscuit. Maybe something not so rich. Or even trying a holestic supliment to his food for digestion issues.

Dont know. I have spent a long time on this and it seems to mildely improve but he will still clear the room with his gas or even peal paint off my walls.

I also had those issues with my dogs on the "premium" brands. My dogs also experienced coat loss & balding, horrible weight & muscle loss, and terribly dry skin- just to name a few. However, having said that, it's not always the food. Have you had your vet run an allergy test? There is one available and you might be surprised with what you find. In all actuality (and I'm not saying this is necessarily the case here), seasonal and household allergies are much more common than food allergies. If your vet can't find anything with the allergy test, you could try some probiotics (they sell them at health food stores). Good luck!

See that would make more sense to me. But his coat is perfect and his skin is good. He muscle tone is perfect. He gets tons of compliments at the vet and from other people. Then he farts.....

He shows no sign of skin iratations. He does not chew his feet or show any signs that would alarm me to some kinda of allergy or skin allergy.

The vet never suggested to do an allergy test because he doesn't have any external signs.

I have gone from Nutro to Canaday to Wellness in the last three years. It seems to have gotten alittle better after I switched him off he lamb.

But I am still puzzled.

I have heard that there are food allergies that can do this, Sensitive stomachs and or how quickly he eats.

some foods never really put what ingredinets are in the food and the alergies or side affects they can have im glad my vet run tests on my boys otherwise i would of been none the wiser its hard though making sure they dont have this and that

I will try having him tested. It seems to be acting up more when he has treats. Then again .. when I seem to have it figured out.. he proves me wrong.

So what do you feed your boys? Also what do you reward them with?

I have seriously limited his treat intake. Which is really hard.. especially when they know where the treats are

my boys are fed on dr johns its gluten free and chudleys and if they have a tin of food its butchers only as that is gluten free as well,as for treats they have a biscuit which is made special for dogs that are gluten tolerant like a hard tack biscuit without the bad stuff in it:)

I really think the only thing to do is have him tested. I looked up the ingredients for everything he is currently eating and all do not list any forms of Gluten. However they all list carrots as ingredents. If he eats a raw carrot. I am cleaning the house for at least two days. So it is pretty much an endless riddle with out having a vet do a test I guess.

oh dear and many of the foods today contain carrots as an ingredient have you tried him on raw like fresh liver and hearts you can even boil them but never give to much as liver is high in iron and to much iron is not good for dogs, check the protein level on the food cos to much protein is not good

I also did a lot of reading in regards to Gluten, dairy, soy and corn.

His food contains barley. His treats all contain carrots and some form of gluten grain.

I think I am going to have him on his food only for a couple of weeks and see what happens.

I did a lot of reading on Wellness CORE. Which is the grain free, dairy free, corn and soy free. Food. I might try that if he is still doing this on his food alone.

All I have to say is Thank You. For point out the possibilty of a gluton allergy

WOW.. I started feeding Zeke "Taste of The Wild"

http://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/

Amasing improvement. He has a gluton allergy it is obvious. I did not take him to the vet and glad I was able to figure it out. Took about 2 years to figure this out. Once I got him on grain free food and I got him some gluton free treats of chicken and brown Rice and some duck jerky. He has had NOT digestion issues in over a month. This is the longest he has ever gone with out any. He loves this food more then any food he has ever eaten.

I highly recomend it.
