I have a 1 year old male Great Dane who is the sweetest dog I have ever known. He is very affectionate and well socialized to people and other animals, which is great. It was my goal to ensure that he was well adjusted to other animals and people. However, he is so sweet and gentle toward everyone we come in contact with that I wonder if he would protect me if I were ever threatened. My husband travels a lot and we got him for companionship and protection when I am home alone. From all of my research it is said that the breed has a protective nature, and though I have never been in danger or threatened in his presence I wonder how he would react if I were in trouble. I can just see him licking the offender . . . LOL.

For the most part dogs that see that their owner is in imediate danger will act completely out of character. i have seen this with my friends akita and another friends siberian husky.

Actually, I think they would. You can't be too sure unless, one day, you are really in danger. All dogs seem to be this way. My dogs both are like this - you never would expect it because they are so friendly to 10 year old kids, and such, and then when people walk by they will bark and growl. It's strange actually. Maybe you should try faking danger (NOT where the person will get injured or where the dog will get angry with you). But, leave your dog home alone, and jiggle the front door. Pretend you've been gone for a while. (Or, leave your great Dane loose in the house, leave your house, go to the mall, come back and slowly jiggle the front door continuously. See dogs reaction)

by the way, no husky would attack an intruder, they have been known to sit quietly while burgalurs are making out the back door.
