General Description of the Kuvasz
The Kuvasz is a large dog of medium bone, slightly longer than it is tall. The head is clean and well proportioned, with an elongated skull and v-shaped ears that are slightly rounded at the tip. Eyes are dark brown, almond shaped and a little slanted. The muzzle is fairly long but not pointed, and the teeth meet in a scissors bite. The body is powerful and efficiently muscular, with a straight, broad back and a stomach that is well tucked up. The tail is long and carried low, reaching down to the hocks. Feet are catlike. The Kuvasz has a double coat made up of a fine undercoat covered by a medium coarse outer coat that ranges from straight to very wavy; hair on the head and feet is short and smooth, and the neck and chest sport a mane. Coloring is always white throughout.

Kuvasz Temperament
The Kuvasz’ pristine looks belie its tough guardian heritage. This dog is loyal to and protective of its family, and may display especially high protective tendencies toward “its” children. The Kuvasz is typically kind toward other pets. The dog does not take well to other dogs and strangers, and can become aggressive toward anything it views as a threat. The Kuvasz can be rather stubborn and independent, which makes training trying at times. Though this dog certainly loves its family, it tends not to display this feeling openly and may appear aloof at times. The Kuvasz is unsurpassed both as a watchdog and guard dog, and adds a palpable sense of security to any home.

Caring for a Kuvasz
The Kuvasz needs a lot of exercise, and should be given the chance to run around in a park or go for a long walk every day. Socialization and obedience training during puppyhood will help ensure that your Kuvasz gets along with other dogs, but you should nevertheless always be careful when introducing your Kuvasz to a strange dog. The Kuvasz can live outside in temperate climates and enjoys cold weather. Coat care consists of biweekly brushing for most of the year, and potentially daily brushing during shedding season. Kuvaszok typically live long and healthy lives; some may develop osteochondritis dissecans (OCD), canine hip dysplasia (CHD) or hypothyroidism.
