  1. General Description of the English Cocker Spaniel

Slightly larger and more rugged than his American cousin, the English Cocker Spaniel is a compactly built dog, uniquely well suited to hunting. The skull is slightly flat with moderate stop, and the muzzle is broad. Eyes are oval shaped, wide set, and possess an expression that is soft but at the same time intelligent and alert. Ears are long, low set and abundantly covered with hair. The body is athletic and efficiently muscular, with a topline that slopes slightly toward the rear. The tail is docked and carried horizontally; the English Cocker Spaniel is known to wag his tail with notable gusto while in the field. The coat is short and clean on the head, medium length on the body, and well feathered; the coat is slightly wavy or flat, and the texture is silky. Coloring is solid red, solid black, solid liver, black and tan, liver and tan, or any of these colors on a white background parti-colored, roaned or ticked.

  2. English Cocker Spaniel Temperament

The English Cocker Spaniel is a happy and affectionate pet that does very well in homes with dogs, other pets and children. The English Cocker Spaniel’s temperament is very similar to that of the American Cocker Spaniel: both animals are sweet, playful, eager to please, sensitive and friendly. The biggest difference between the two is that the English has a bit more of a hunting instinct, and is therefore more at home in the field and at play than the American Cocker. The English Cocker Spaniel loves to hunt, and shows it with a furiously wagging tail.

  3. Caring for an English Cocker Spaniel

The English Cocker Spaniel is an active breed and requires a lot of exercise. If you’re not into hunting, you can still simulate the dog’s natural forte with a game of fetch or a challenging training session. The English Cocker Spaniel has respectable tolerance for both heat and cold, but it should not live outside; it is a highly social animal that thrives on human interaction. The dog’s coat needs brushing at least twice a week, as well as clipping around the head, ears, feet and tail every few months. Regular cleaning of the ears is also recommended. Health concerns of note in the breed include progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, kidney disease, canine hip dysplasia, cataracts and hypothyroidism.
